The transition from a life of complete independence to a life in an assisted living facility can be scary, but every day will leave you feeling more comfortable than the last. Therefore, having a good first day is essential! If you have reservations or concerns about the big day, this blog should assuage your concerns and provide valuable tips that will help you feel relaxed, calm, and excited about your future prospects in our community.
The Moving Process
We recently wrote about the struggles that can come with moving, but in short, a group of family, friends, and movers that can help you prepare for your move early and swiftly finish the process goes a long way. The best option for you is to take a backseat and let those that chose to help you do their best based on your input. You will likely have a wide range of emotions, both good and bad, and focusing on yourself will do much more for the overall moving process compared to moving around a few boxes.
All of the technical details – how to access your new room at our facility, the closest entry point for a fast move-in, and any particular requests made for the transport of your items – will be relayed to the movers to ensure your items arrive on time and intact. Members of our staff are ready to help deal with any unforeseen problems that arise. Once all of this information is given out and the process has begun, it is not a bad idea to step aside and relax with family or use the time to take in the new sights and locations of the facility. Before the movers leave, you can return to your new room and request any final alterations that don’t fit your liking or didn’t work as well as you planned in your head beforehand.
Joining The Community
Ultimately, the best way for you to make a comfortable transition into this new living arrangement is to get out and about to experience it firsthand. Even if you are not eager to join in on social activities with residents just yet, touring the grounds once more with your family and friends and committing to memory all of the important locations will make our facility feel less like a temporary stop and more like your new home.
Once you feel comfortable or decide the time is right, meeting the staff and residents who live alongside you will go a long way in changing your perception of your new living space. Your new neighbors are likely to be curious and eager to stop by and say hello. Even if socializing is not your forte, always try your best! Fostering healthy and enjoyable relationships with your potential new friends will help combat any feelings of loneliness or isolation that sometimes come with the transition to a new home. Our residents and staff can also help answer any lingering questions or concerns you have about our facility.
Eventually, the time will come to finalize the move and work on the final details, such as boxes of toiletries and personal items. Don’t stress yourself out attempting to make everything perfect the very first night. If your first day has left you feeling overwhelmed, take a breather, relax on the couch, or turn in for an early night.
Your first-day experience can leave lasting impressions that affect how fast you acclimate to your new home. With friends and family by your side throughout the transition, you can make it a good day and start a new chapter in your life on the right foot.
